Veteran and author Chuck Tatum was a machine gunner with the 5th Marine Division during the Pacific War. Tatum served in the Battle of Iwo Jima, where he earned the Bronze Star.
On Iwo, he fought alongside his idol, Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone. Chuck Tatum's book, Red Blood, Black Sand was one of five books used as a basis for the The Pacific mini-series.
