  • D-Day +1: P-51 Mustangs of the 354th Fighter Group slice through the skies above Ste. Mère Église. While the sound of Merlin engines reverberates in the streets below, townspeople watch M4 Shermans of the 746th Tank Battalion rumble through—the first armor off Utah Beach. As the mayor of the French town would recall: “Majestic as gods, powerful as giants. They meant victory, and for us, deliverance!” In the church square, 82nd Airborne paratroopers point the tankers toward the fighting. Within minutes, these M4 Shermans will roar into battle, joining the flyboys on the path to triumph.
