  • It’s D-Day morning at Brécourt Manor, where a four-gun German battery has been bombarding GIs landing on Utah Beach—that is, until the Screaming Eagles arrived. Lt. Dick Winters initiated the attack at 8:30 a.m. and led his paratroopers into the gun pits. Now, with “grenades and lots of yelling and firing” they charge gun #2 and put it out of action, taking two prisoners. In short order, the battery will be silenced, demonstrating, as Winters would later write, “that remarkable ability for the airborne trooper to fight, albeit outnumbered, and to win.”
